The app and the camera
No. Live view, motion alerts, and video clips work without a subscription. AI bird identification is a paid option inside the app, and you can use the feeder fully without it.
1080P Full HD is sharp enough to see feather detail on a bird at the tray, and it is the right trade for a solar powered feeder. Higher resolution streams need more power and more bandwidth, which means a battery that drains faster and video that stutters on ordinary home WiFi. NestTraxx is optimized for smooth streaming, extended battery life, and reliable WiFi performance instead of a bigger number on the box.
NestTraxx works with the VicoHome app, free on iPhone and Android. It handles setup, live view, motion alerts, video clips, and the optional AI bird identification.
A 2.4GHz WiFi network with a signal that reaches the feeder. 2.4GHz travels farther than 5GHz, which is why the feeder uses it. If your router broadcasts a single combined network, check its settings for a 2.4GHz option during setup.
When it is turned on, the app looks at each clip and suggests the species. It is a paid option, it can be switched off at any time, and no core feature depends on it.
Power and placement
It depends on how much daylight reaches the roof and how many visits the camera records. In a sunny or partly sunny spot, the solar panel usually keeps the battery topped up on its own. In deep shade, expect to recharge the battery manually from time to time. You can check the battery level in the app.
The tray is open, so a determined squirrel can reach it, just like any tray feeder. A pole with a baffle, or a spot several feet from launch points like fences and branches, keeps most of them off. You will get an alert either way.
Empty the hopper, wipe the tray and hopper with warm water and mild soap, rinse, and let everything dry before refilling. Keep water away from the camera module and wipe the lens gently with a soft cloth. A quick clean every couple of weeks keeps seed fresh and birds healthy.
On a post, a fence, or a tree, at a height you can reach for refills, with some daylight on the roof and WiFi signal at the spot. Facing the camera away from direct low sun gives the best video.
